Dr. Sue Sloan, NFLT Psychologist: Will Your Child’s Love for Violence Spark an Interest in Video Games?

A strong correlation has been shown between video games and violence, and responsible parents should be wary of this connection. Although the correlation does not necessarily imply a causal relationship between the two, many parents fear that their bullying child’s love for fighting will cause them to develop an interest in video games.

Many violent video games have reached the market, glorifying acts of random and senseless murder and other violent crimes. Parents that have worked hard not to raise sorry little pansies fear that violence in video games will attract their children and they will become nerds.

The story of Mark Gaver is an extreme example of the potential consequences of violence in video games creating more nerds, and an example of extreme negligence in parenting.  At any time during the 10 preceding months to the incident described had Mark’s family simply entered his room and looked beneath his bed, they would have seen hundreds of dollars’ worth of incriminating evidence and the problem could have been addressed earlier.

Concerned father Harold Gaver says that by the time he realized his son was becoming a nerd, it was already too late. “I came home one night, and Mark was LARPing in a female anime character costume from the Final Fantasy series. It will haunt me for the rest of my life knowing that I could have put a stop to this when it was just Grand Theft Auto or Halo. But I never thought my boy could be involved in that type of activity. When he spent all that time in his room, I hoped he was masturbating. Wishful thinking,” said Harold Gaver, in response to the attacks on his parenting style.

It is important to encourage a bullying spirit in your children by keeping their self-esteem low, and sending them to school without lunch money so that they will have to steal it from others just to get a little nourishment. Many parents, however, forget to make sure that they discourage video gaming in the process.  Remember that healthy minded children are taught that if violence in a video game looks fun, it’s bound to be way more fun in real life. After all, no matter how vibrant video graphics are, they can never offer the satisfying feel of knuckles bruising flesh to hide secret feelings of inadequacy.
